What "Soul Train" taught me about confidence and style

Soul Train was the sh#*T growing up in the 1970s and early '80s. It was where you learned new dances, new music and the latest styles in fashion, from Afros to platforms, all while you were getting your hair done on Saturday. Though I was much too young, I wanted to be a Soul Train dancer.  Today, I was saddened by the news of the death of Soul Train's founder, executive producer and host Don Cornelius. He was the definition of cool. So was his show. Soul Train chronicled the nation's fashion history from the disco look of the 1970s to the neon color-blocking of the 1980s. Its impact continued many years later, but I had already gleaned the lesson: Dressing like you are in love takes confidence, creativity and, sometimes, great music.
