Happy Birthday, George Clooney

Actor George Clooney gave his first-ever lecture, here in Houston last night. I didn't have the opportunity to interview him. Didn't even get near him, but I felt like I had. He was funny, charming and elegantly handsome. Did I say funny? Actually, George was hilarious. He talked about his childhood in Kentucky, his activism in the Sudan and his reflections on his life. (He turns 51 on May 6.)

His motto: "Be the person that your dog thinks you are."

His greatest achievement: "My children." (George has none.)

How to find balance: "I drink."

Biggest fear: "Never giving it (life) a shot."

From his dad, advice on life: "Never mix grain with grape."

From his mom, an appreciation of  leisure suits: "My mother made my clothes. She made leisure suits. The worst hell is being a kid with your mother in the pattern store, trying to find one for a leisure suit." (I, too, hated going to the fabric store with my mom as  child. It felt like torture.)

If I had gotten a chance to talk with George, I would have asked him about his thoughts on dressing like you are in love.

I'm pretty sure he knows a lot about it.
