What Girl Scouts taught me about dressing well

To celebrate the 100th anniversary of Girl Scouts, I wrote a post, "5 fashionable things I learned as Girl Scout Brownie" on my Houston Chronicle ShopGirl blog today. I loved being a Brownie scout - the ritual, pride and comradery. (Yes, that's my original uniform.) It was also one of my first experiences in dressing like you are in love. Here's why:

1. Pride. I felt like a princess every time I put on my Brownie uniform. It was a ritual of adornment for a little girl. Something special.

2. Care. I was too young to launder my own uniform, but I nagged my mother to make sure  it was cleaned, pressed and ready each time.

3. Fit. I liked my uniform just right. Not too tight or too big.

4. Comfort. I learned early that pockets and soft fabrics made me feel comfortable. Zippers made it easy to get off after a long day.

5. Style. The brown beanie was the icing for me. I played with different ways to wear it on my head. Made it my own, so to speak.

Here's to another 100 years.
